The first three will indicate the numerical day of the year the bike was assembled, and the last digit will indicate the last number of the year.
And the third digit in your serial # might indicate 1983.Look on the headbadge and try and find four small numbers stamped on it. The reason I say that is that I remember from an earlier discussion, we determined that '83 was the first year for the Traveler to have a chromoly frame, but it only had chromoly 'main tubes,' not the stays. I don't understand your statement that you can't find a serial number that starts with 'S' when the number you list starts with 'S.' ?.I could be way wrong about it being a Traveler, but it's fun to guess.
